BS National Super (Manley) Frames are a type of beekeeping frame designed specifically for use in the “National” beehive system, which is commonly used in the UK. The “Manley” frames are an alternative design to the standard National frames, offering a few specific features tailored for certain beekeeping needs. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what makes these frames unique:

• The Manley design refers to a specific type of frame design created by the British beekeeper H. Manley. Manley frames are slightly different from traditional National frames in their construction, offering some distinct advantages.
• One of the key features of Manley frames is that they have square side rails compared to traditional National frames. This design modification means only 10 Manley frames are required for a standard BS National Super box (unlike SN1,2,4,&5’s, which require a minimum of 11). They also hold more honey that the standard SN1,2,4 or 5 frames and therefore there’s more honey per frame and less uncapping to do!
• Manley created these to prevent the frames from banging against each other when he migrated his bees from one crop to another for pollination purposes.
• Although these frames are specifically designed for the National hive, they are often interchangeable with other types of hives and frames, including the WBC, depending on the system being used. Beekeepers with multiple hives or different frame types may find that the Manley frames offer versatility in their apiaries.

BS National Brood (DN5) Frames are designed for use in the brood chamber of a BS National beehive. These frames are deeper than those used in honey supers and provide the perfect environment for the queen to lay eggs and the bees to rear their brood. The DN5 frames have wide top bars, therefore requiring less of them than the Deep National (DN) 1,2, and 4’s and can be spaced adequately within a brood box in a set of 10.

Langstroth super frames are designed to fit the super section of a Langstroth hive. Super frames: These are the shortest frames, typically used for honey storage. They are 5 5/8″ deep.
