Jubilee High School Beekeeping Project Reaches £800 Milestone

We are delighted to share that the Jubilee High School beekeeping project has already raised more than £800, an incredible achievement that reflects the enthusiasm and support the project has received from our members. At the end of the season, I will double this amount to enable the school to pay for training, hives, bees and equipment needed.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the school’s two new beehives were installed, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for students and staff alike. Since then, we have taken another important step forward by launching the school’s very first Beekeeping Club.

To help introduce the project, I recently delivered a presentation to approximately 150 Year 7 students and teachers, explaining the importance of bees, the challenges pollinators face, and the vital role they play in supporting our environment and food production. The session also served as the official launch of the school’s new Beekeeping Club, giving students an opportunity to become directly involved in caring for the hives and learning about beekeeping.

The response has been extremely encouraging. The first Beekeeping Club session attracted six student attendees, all keen to learn about bees, hive management, and the practical aspects of beekeeping. Interest continues to grow, with a further seven students already expressing their wish to attend the next session.

Over the coming months, Archie and I will be working closely with the students, providing practical training and helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to care for the hives. The project is designed not only to introduce young people to beekeeping but also to create a sustainable programme that can continue for years to come.

Looking ahead, one of the school’s tutors will attend the NewBee weekend training course next April. This will help build in-house expertise and ensure the school has the knowledge and support needed to continue developing the project independently.

Our aim is that by next year the students and staff will be managing the beekeeping programme with minimal support from me, creating a lasting legacy of learning, environmental awareness, and community engagement.

Special thanks go to those members who have already donated. The school fund has now exceeded £800 for Jubilee High. We have already planned their extraction session for their return in September with 20 children going to attend and extract their honey.
