Did you know?

Over 70% of our trees are pollinated by bees (providing essential Oxygen).

  • Animal feed contain plant products which are reliant on bees for pollination. Cattle, poultry, sheep and pigs graze on animal pellets, not just grass. These contain alfalfa, clover, soya beans, calendula petals, and peas which are all pollinated by bees. Without them, meat, poultry, game, dairy products and eggs would be more difficult to produce and much more expensive to buy.
  • Commercially produced fish are often fed on pellet food containing soya bean and oil seed rape, pollinated by bees.
  • Vegetable oil (Oil Seed rape) is pollinated by bees.
  • The majority of fruit and vegetables rely on bees for pollination including:
    • Coffee, tea and Chocolate
    • All berry fruits (e.g. blackberry, strawberry) including cherries, all currants
    • Lemons, grapefruit, limes, tangerines and oranges
    • Cashews, almonds, brazil nuts and coconuts
    • Melons, Courgette, Pumpkin, Cucumber and Squash
    • Apples, pears, quince
    • Vegetables including Peas, beans and brassica (cabbage), turnip, kale, sprouts, carrots, fennel
    • Herbs & Spices including Saffron, Vanilla, Cardamon, Parsley, Basil, Coriander, Rosemary , Oregano, Sage, Mint, Thyme, Lavender, Chives, Rosemary and Bay leaf.
    • Beets including beetroot and chard
    • Potatoes and tomatoes
    • Cotton, flax used in material product, and some hemp used to produce rope.
  • Other than this, honeybees are also responsible for production of honey, bees wax (to produce candles and in some beauty products), propolis (an antibacterial agent), pollen (high in protein), royal jelly, and bee venom.

Benefits of eating honey:

  • Volume for volume you only need ½ the volume of honey compared to sugar for the same amount of sweetness but has less than half the calories.
  • Natural honey has nutritional benefit as it contains pollen (high levels of protein and amino acids), propolis (resin collected by the bees from trees which is has antibacterial properties) and small quantities of hydrogen peroxide (a product of making honey (nectar and invertase from the bees saliva) which is the antibacterial agent known to help healing.
  • Honey boosts your immune system.
